PYRAMIDS ARE MADE for climbing. That’s what architect Ryan Singer realized the first time he clambered atop one of the two 8-footers shown here. “I could see everything—the ocean and the house I designed—from a fresh perspective,” he says.
“It was amazing.” He did what any youngster would do: “I sat down and slid to the bottom.”
Laguna Beach’s pyramids surround a home’s entryway. Each rises from a 12-foot square in-ground concrete retaining wall and is covered with plastic mesh and hard-packed clay soil removed during a driveway repair. The mesh irrigates soft fescue using drip tubing.
How do you mow a near-vertical lawn? It’s easier than it seems: Use a reel mower at the base and a string trimmer to cut the top.
